It actually makes no difference to the appearance whether the gimp goes under the right or left hand thread. What is altered is the twists before and after. I'm no purist as far as gimps are concerned so my suggestion for anyone who is having difficulties, is that you should put in 2 twists before the gimp and 2 twists after it, then whichever way the gimp is woven through you will always be left with at least one twist before and one after - the difference between 1 twist and 3 twists is negligible in most circumstances compared with the difference between 1 twist and no twist.
