Anyone who knows me well, knows that I love lace and loathe maths...
but they came together yesterday.
Ian and I were at an all-day hearing at the Town Hall in Christchurch
(N.Z.) yesterday. Also at the Town Hall were what seemed like hordes
of local schoolchildren, taking part in the annual "Cantamaths"
competitions. After the day's proceedings at the hearing were
finished, we decided to have a look at the art and model entries on
display in the competition area - our daughter had earned an award
when at school, so we knew what effort goes into each entry. Among
the string-paintings, posters, and elaborate models, a small square
display caught my eye - "Bobbin Lace and Mathematics". On it was
mounted a Torchon bookmark, a lace bobbin, and a very well-written
outline of how lace is made, and how it relates to maths through
algorithms (I had to Google this word, when I got home!!) together
with three outlines of algorithms that the maker had used in her lace
project. The display was concise, attractive, and best of all, it
had won a 'highly commended' award!
What a pleasant surprise, to find lace in this unlikely setting!
