A little footnote - not sure where I came across this nugget:

It is said that in the East Midlands counties, Buckinghamshire and
Bedfordshire, where lacemaking and straw-plaiting (for hats) were both cottage
industries, the boys much preferred to kiss a lacemaker. Why? Because the
straw plaiters kept the straws in their mouths, to moisten them, which
roughened their lips!
