This discussion brings several things to mind. There is much prison focus for
teaching knitting and crochet in the US, but some disallow knitting because of
the knitting needles/pins and only allow crochet.
One would think of bobbins as relatively harmless by comparison. <S>
It made me smile as thinking of one applying intense focus could take attention
away from deviant behavior. LOL And I thought we did it mostly for creativity
and beauty...
Some are drawn to lace knitting for brain exercise/anti-alzheimer's focus, and
it does give a better return on investment as it typically requires more
intense technique, and for less financial investment. (Case in point: it isn't
unusual to spend $200 on yarn for a sweater nowadays (or more) but one can
often obtain laceweight for a complicated shawl/stole for perhaps $25, as an
approximate analogy).
As I live my life I also note that often the rich and the poor align in
interests and fundamental perspectives or the extremes are similar.
One example would be that there were times that only wealthy individuals would
have the free time to do needlework, and also the poor often did it not only
for additional income, but to save money. I miss those days when sewing or
knitting could save money...<grin>
Which brings us full circle back to the amusing anecdotes...
Best,
Susan Reishus
