In regard to Nm, I think it would be the best way to go, but most yarns have
instead turned a little more toward 'tex'. I think part of the reason is
thread is a more static or stable (relatively) vs. yarns today which can have
inordinate stretch, halo, etc., which cannot yield a true description of the
actual 'hand' of the garment fabric which is critical to size outcome and
drape. The descriptive words (sport, worsted, etc.) are being used less, and
often suggested ndl. size and spi or stitches per inch (often given in 4"
measure for more accurate averages) used. With all things becoming more
international, many are now purchasing in total gram weight vs. yardage, but it
is new to the average consumer. Most are surprised that you need about the
same grams for a sweater whether it is fingering or worsted, etc. It certainly
is frustrating, esp. when one segues to thread.
Do you really think that the pins would be considered a danger in prisons?
Perhaps by swallowing but what a way to go. I assumed some sewing was allowed
in prisons, but not the typical scissors/shears (only blunts). I haven't time
to check with friends who do charity in prisons, but know most are relegated to
teaching crochet because of the safety issues. I also thought much of it was
in harming another, not just oneself, with fights, intimidation, etc.
Best,
Susan Reishus
