I think that it was because teeth were yellow at that time (all the poisoning and such, perhaps too much pewter too), and so they dyed their lace to match until brushing teeth became prevalent. (Ducking and running...obviously too late here, and getting punchy). LOL Best, (or not so) Susan ReishusPerhaps linen wasn't as white then so a creamier color was desirable indicating quality, and increasing use of cotton was dyed to replicate a more linen look?
