Hello, Sandra -
I have this book, and have taken a look. The book _is_ confusing in
regard to the prickings.
As I see it, the designs are meant to be executed at a larger scale
than simply bookmarks. Given the size of the threads and the complexity
of the ground stitches and gimpwork, they need to be large - as in table
ribbons. I vaguely remember that this is how they were described when
the book first came out. This book was an extension of her "Grunds"
books, which explored the nearly unlimited variations in snowflakes and
grounds that can be worked, and then the effects of incorporating a
contrasting gimp.
The prickings are all there, each with its own project. Sometimes
they're in two or three pieces, and she tells you that you can photocopy
and join together as many sections as you need to get the length you
want. For example, the pricking for the first project starts on page
13, with figures 1.1 and 1.3. Continue to page 14 for the center
section, figure 1.2. She provides vertical lines with arrows which are
your scale lines. To use the threads she suggests, you should insure
that your photocopies of the sections all match the scale lines in the book.
If you look further, you can see that she uses this same pricking for a
number of designs. On the color pages just inside the cover, you'll see
that designs 1.0 through 1.4 are similar, with variations in the
groundwork and gimpwork as determined by the lacemaker. Additional
prickings are found further along in the book. She has even coded the
designs as A,B,C,D - with A being suitable for lacemakers who have not
yet worked Binche.
I would suggest that this is not a book for beginners to continental
laces, although if you are an advanced and adventurous lacemaker, her
explanations and diagrams are clear enough that you should be able to
work it. I'm glad you mentioned this book, because it made me take
another look and see how delightful some of the patterns are... another
item on the "to-do" list!

At the 2005 Denver IOLI convention I purchased a book by Ulrike Lohr called
"Dick durch Dunn". Of course, I didn't look closely when I purchased it and
have just discovered that there are no prickings included. Does anyone
else have this book that could let me know if there were separate prickings
that I didn't get for some reason? Does anyone have any suggestions of how
I can go about obtaining the prickings? I would have tried to contact
Ulricke directly but don't have any contact info for her. Any help or
suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I would love to work some of the
lace.
