David, Small flat headed pins work best - pushed all the way into the pillow. I'll use some of my bent brass lace pins for this (good way to recycle, reuse).
The pins from mens' dress shirts with the small raised heads are OK if you're not constantly turning your pillow - otherwise don't bother with them - the little raised heads (smaller than the dressmakers pins with glass/coloured heads) will drive you bonkers with them bumping and catching your bobbins and threads.. If you dress your pillow correctly, the flat pin heads won't be a problem at all.
