David, I wish I had known that you were to spend a month in VN. My SIL spends part of each year there and is there now, in fact. She has a good knowledge of the hand crafts of VN, sources, etc. While there together, we enjoyed exploring fabrics and embroidery. As has been mentioned, bobbin lace making is not done in Viet Nam. Embroidery, by machine, as well as by hand, is the most traditional since they have been used as ornamentation for the national dress, the ao dai. Much of that has been replaced today by more fashionable spray paint, but there is still a good variety of embroidery available for sale.
