All I remember is that the bobbins existed, but if you wanted to search the 
Internet you might be helped by knowing that "the little 'stereoscope' type 
doodad" has a name - it's called a Stanhope viewer. A website I turned up says 
they were manufactured in France until 1972; I don't know if anyone still makes 
them. But they were stuck into a lot of inexpensive souvenirs, and bone items 
were popular.
