I'd recommend downloading the original from The Professor's site, for the
patterns (the full two volumes are available here) and buying Rosemary
Shepherd's book for indications on how to work them.  I am pleased to own a
copy
of the reprint with instructions and introduction, well worth the GBP9 I
paid
for it, but the technical section of the book, while ground-breaking in
its
time, is over 25 years old, and we have built on the foundations
provided.  The
historical introduction is of course still definitive, but for
a practical lace
worker buying the edition published by Ruth Bean in 1983 for
an astronomic
price, no - save your hard-earned for Santina Levey's Lace, a
History, and get
the same and so much more!
