"DO NOT use blue film for black thread...(and)...not sure why..."
As my grandmother always said, to get (dye) a really good black, one needs navy, and so a blue background creates blending (black thread and blue background) and not contrast. The opposite/complimentary color for blue is yellow-orange, so true, a salmon or some version of blush would work. Additionally green added to blue, shifts it off enough that it creates more contrast, also shared. The challenge becomes that yellow is hard to look at for a long time, as it is the color that catches the eye the most. Choosing a color that is pleasing, but contrasts and jars the eye a bit can sometimes end up being personal choice, but there are general patterns perceptions. I think a lot of people choose blue pillow covers as it is a restful thing to contemplate in nature, such as the blue of water or in the sky, so a good background. Then the pricking (background or design itself) needs to be enough to jog the eye but not overwhelm. A lifetime of working in/with color...love the subject!
