Mistakes do happen in libraries - and I've even been on the receiving end of
abuse from patrons over a mistake or a computer hiccup and also on the end
of being the one receiving the notice regarding a missing book (book was
located on the shelf when I checked).

It's not just lace books that are kept - and people who do 'liberate' shall
we say books from public collections are doing a disservice to the rest of
the patrons who use the library, since we all contribute $ to the funds to
buy new books. There are as many reasons for 'keeping' a book as there are
books. It still doesn't make it right.

If you are checking a catalogue for lace books (or any books for that
matter), check the availability on the shelf if you are able to. If a book
is still checked out from 3 months ago, it's probably not coming back. Sad,
and rather negative, but it's probably worth looking at getting it in from
another branch or library. You can also make a request to your library to
purchase materials. There's no guarantee that they will buy the book, but
it's worth asking. Sometimes you never know. And sometimes if you put in
an ILL request, the ILL Department will look at the title and refer it to
acquisitions for purchase.

Cheers,
Helen, Duvall, WA
