Hi Nancy
Well, I like diagrams. I was taught using only colored diagrams (I didn't
learn cross and twist - I was taught "1, 2, 3, 4" - and other terms until I
stumbled over other lacemakers later in my learning career, 32+ years ago -
gosh, it's been quite awhile . . ) My teacher was Ruth Hough-Christiansen
who was Danish and trained in Denmark - she had a "certificate" of which she
was very proud. When I purchased my first book - J. Nyrop-Larsen's prickings
and Diagrams, and I cannot remember the title - she had her husband phone me
and say that if I thought I could learn from a book, then she would not
teach me anymore. You see, I had to pay her for each pricking and each
colored diagram, which she had drawn out (as she had been taught in Denmark,
I suppose) and she wanted that bit extra, I guess, in addition to the $20
per hour fee. (In 1978 dollars.)
All that rubbish aside (funny how these memories surface when bidden) I DO
like diagrams, I no longer NEED them all the time, but I never go out of my
way to turn one down . .
Cheers,
Alison
