there isn't space to use my wooden small rolling pin, but the soft sausage
type already suggested might work, or rolled hanky,or as you suggest a
folded napkin or a little cotton bag I have which I will try. I want to
avoid catching it on the pins so restraining some of it seems wise. If the
cotton bag is pinned on the back and the work covered with my cover cloths
as at the moment there is space above it to lay the bag on, allowing the bag
to pull up and close when not in use. I wouldn't have considered working a
beds piece in this way on this pillow, just torchon and hoping to make an
attractive piece with that. That is certainly robust for washing and using.
Thank you for all your suggestions, all very helpful Helen.

If you have a small 'rolling pin' to roll your lace around, you can always
tuck that roll inside a folded napkin or spare cover cloth on the back of
the pillow, if there's no little pouch.
Good luck with your piece. It sounds like a fun project.
Cheers,
