Robin & all,
Most of us love to encourage nesting birds but need to remember that birds have a strong instinct for what is appropriate and what is not. If they make a mistake they learn the hard way and I have personally witnessed this. I've seen Robins make a poor choice of a nesting site and after the nestlings were nice and plump the Crows ate them in less than 30 seconds. They usually don't make the same mistake again. Birds that nest in the open (especially in deciduous trees or on the ground) rely on camouflage, and bright threads are not the color of natural camouflage. Intelligent birds are attracted to bright colors, and Crows & Jays are especially smart. An argument can certainly be made that nature can be cruel, but I try not to contribute to that cruelty and that's why I send a "heads up" each year.

And BTW I worked with birds for more than 25 years and oh the stories I could tell.......
