I don't have a Kindle, but my DD does, and she's able to borrow ebooks from
our local library system here in WA. We checked this out prior to purchase,
with a family friend who we dubbed 'The Kindle Guy" as he works on the
Kindle project.

When it first came out, and we were paying homage to his Kindle, I
half-jokingly said that the only thing missing was the new book smell -
which as a former acquisitions librarian, was one of the perks of handling
the new books first before the Researchers could get their hot little hands
on them. Needless to say I got a pithy comment in reply :-)

Kindle is the Amazon.com product. I know there are some limits as to what
sorts of video displays can be shown on it - it doesn't do the 'ultraviolet'
format (I think that's what it's called).

There are pros and cons of all the different formats the printed word comes
in, and it all comes down to personal preference :-) If I had had the
choice of lugging my hefty text books to and from college daily on the train
in rush hour, versus a neat little compact gadget, I think I'd have opted
for the gadget. For my DD who's a bookworm, it's been great, as she can use
it at school for her independent reading, and it saves room and weight in
her hefty backpack (they don't have lockers except for PE at her HS) -
although she still wants a hard copy of her favorite books to keep and
reread.
