A random thought to muck up the works... What about people posting locations from virtual worlds?
(I regularly post to Twitter and other services from within Second Life, and as OpenSim gains traction, I hope to do the same from OpenSim based virtual worlds. For that matter, one of the ideas I would love to explore down the road when I have some free time, is OpenSim-Laconi.ca connectivity. I'm seeing that the lack of this functionality in Twitter is creating an environment where we have siloed location-aware Twitter clients and I'd like to work on a more open solution. Here's some more thoughts on this: 1. I think we need support for both user-provided (manually) location data, and automatically provided data (via GPS etc.). Manually provided data may be of the form City, Administrative Area, Country or something like that, while automatically provided data would be in lat/long. I think it's also necessary to keep this data separate, as manually-provided data may be inaccurate in a great deal of cases (i.e. a notebook-based Twitter client where the user is mobile but is not good about updating their current location). There may be applications that depend on accurate information to provide utility, and may therefore want to filter out inaccurate information. There may be other solutions, but I think that it's important to avoid a situation where location information gets too polluted with inaccurate information as this may seriously degrade some location-based applications. Another way to approach this would be timestamping the last location update in the profile current location. GPS-based devices may update this information frequently and thus implicitly -Josh Evan Prodromou wrote: > On Mon, 2008-08-04 at 15:21 -0700, Josh Perfetto wrote: >> I'm wondering whether there'd be any interest in attaching geocoded >> locations of some sort to notices?
