git++

There are (or at least were) also these version incompatibilies
between IIRC 1.0.9 and 2.0 and laconica IIRC uses 1.0.9 while many
Linux distributions ship no 1.0.x version anymore.

Ack.

Good question. repo.or.cz is the other popular git hoster. SourceForge
still doesn't seem to have any git hosting yet.

bzr/bazaar/bazaar-ng seems to have far too many forks floating around
(someone said there are "about 2.4 bazaar forks" ;-) to make clear
which one is the right one to use. This thread made me look up why
"bazaar" has been thrown out of Debian Lenny/Sid months ago
(http://bugs.debian.org/454313) and when I asked for the connections
between bzr, bazaar, bazaar-ng and bazaar-vcs.org in IRC, the first
answer was "Don't ask".

In comparison to bzr/bazaar, git is widely accepted and used in a vast
number of different projects, but good in branching and merging, too.
And there are converters from and to nearly every other VCS for git.
Just its usage is a little uncommon for those who are used to e.g.
svn, cvs or hg. (Not sure about darcs here, haven't used it that much
-- only with laconica.)

The only other drawback of git (beside its not so common UI) is that
some of the important features are working only with 1.5.x and above
while Debian Etch has only 1.4.x (but for luck there are 1.5.x
backports available at backports.org and Debian Lenny is hopefully
released before christmas(*)).

So IMHO moving from darcs to git is a step forward and also the only
step making sense.

(*) No year mentioned intentionally. ;-)

                Regards, Axel
