I think this actually is a signal of a deeper want for general customization in the whole system. I've been playing with Laconica at home and work, and there are lots of little things that I wish I could tweak sometime (OpenID on/off, char limit, skins!). I'm all for starting a customizability front if anyone's interested. I'd like to try to mirror MediaWiki's hook and LocalSettings concepts if possible - from my work on it, that system has completely opened up a world of customization while staying 100% vanilla.
