So, another option is not to guess at all, but always to assume that an
un-modified name is on the local system. With Laconica, usernames are
unique on the local system. So, if mary on identi.ca uses "@john", that
always refers to http://identi.ca/john.
The advantage here is that it would work more like email usually does:
if I send a message just to "zach", my MUA or (occasionally) MTA will
assume I'm talking about [email protected].
If there's a problem with this, we can also let users define aliases,
which take precedence. So, if mary maps "john" to
http://bleeper.de/john, then when /she/ says "@john", it's always to
http://bleeper.de/john, not http://identi.ca/john .
I could definitely live with this solution.
