While I agree threading would be nice (may I suggest a limit of 3
levels? it becomes a nightmare beyond that both in terms of the
interaction as well as the styling), I should point out two things:
Google is not shutting down Jaiku. It will continue to run. For a time
anyways.
laconi.ca is not in competition with Jaiku or Twitter.

Well that's quite a surprise!
I used Jaiku before taking up Identica. Two good features it has are
"channels" and a much better system for "replies" (they appear
grouped
below a message, not in streams, and aren't character-limited).
