Just to add a note of support for this. I was installing Laconica
again last night on Dreamhost and looking at the list of requirements
to get it fully functional. Alternatives to pcntl_fork and Sphinx need
to be offered for smaller installations that are depending on the
distributed model of OMB rather than the larger centralised approach
of Identica that is resource hungry. If one-click installs on shared
hosts ala WordPress is an objective for Laconica development, the
choice of a more lightweight 'personal' version at the point of
install could be useful. The WordPress and WordPress MU distinction
might be worth considering.

I don't have the knowledge to fix this, but I am certainly wanting
this patch. I can run cron jobs, but the pcntl_fork() function that
the daemons rely on is not available to me, and I suspect it is
unavailable to many people running on shared hosting.
