With Laconica 0.8.0, you should be able to add this line to your config.php:
addPlugin('Template');
I haven't played with it much, but I think you can then just edit the
template file and it will work.

P.S. You must retain the links notifying users of their license to the
software and a link to the source. It's also pretty nice to leave the
link in giving the people on this list credit for making a nice piece of
software for you to use.
