Leo,

I am not running RedHat Directory server, just openldap server and LAM.  
Therefore I do not have dirsrv logs.  I can successfully run the ldapsearch.  I 
have run a wireshark sniff on this and it appears that a startls is issued by 
LAM and is accepted by LDAP, but then LAM unbinds without any explanation.

Look at the logs on the ldap server located under /var/log/dirsrv/slapd-*. Also 
see if you can verify TLS is working from the command line on the machine 
running LAM... ldapsearch -x -ZZ '(uid=testuser)'
