Comments about the 235 as an IFR platform.. My 235/320 Lyc does very
well with a S-Tec 50 system. I installed it and it has not been without
problems. First, I have a series of resistors from 18000K to 43000K with a
gang switch, located on the instrument panel, to select the proper pitch
sensitivity which depends on speed, weight, altitude and shoe size
(kidding) The trick is to mimic the A/C's pitch control response with the
50's response to get a phugoid dampening once an control response is called
for. The wiring from the controller to the Gang switch was an intermittant
problem for a while since it came through the rear of the controller
seperate from the 50 pin connector and would short out the unit at
inappropiate times, several trips to Mineral Wells over a years time finally
got it.
Roll control is no real problem, except keep as little "slop" in your
alerion pushrods/rod end bearings as possible. I installed the servo in the
left wing and attached it's push rod to the 90 Degree Bellcrank.
Altitude contoll is really amazing it holds an altitude right on, not
even a 5 ft deviation, once the right resistivity has been selected.
The S-Tec DG with heading bug, an electric turn coordinator, and a
controller wing leveler function completes the system..
On long flights, it relieves the fatigue factor a bunch... It's been a
good unit for 9 years and 500 hrs. Don Skeele N320J (503)769-2563
