Everything worked fine before the 1.8 update.

I have changed the checkout to the one Daniel told me about moments ago and it downloaded... now I am going to try to make a commit soon.

Are you sure you're using the right URL to connect?
http://svn.code.sf.net/p/languagetool/code/trunk/languagetool/
This was changed at the end of April.

And to be able to make commits perhaps you need to use "https" or "svn+ssh" instead of "http".
