That's because I copied the Java code, where escaped characters in a 
regex need an additional escape character, making them invalid outside 
Java.

But to answer my own question: simplifying the regex makes it much 
faster but leads to false alarms like this:

The German rule: UM_UM[1] (exception in token [2]), token [2], contains 
| (pipe) in  regexp bracket expression [|<|\)|\}|\] which is unlikely to 
be correct.
