An update.

I just booted my Dell d810 with the OpenSolaris 2008.05 live cd and
successfully connected to this same wireless network with nwam.

At least that rules out the network as a problem...

Searching the net I also found this:

My laptop is also an IBM Thinkpad R40 so it seems I am not the only
one with issues?

Does nwam, wificonfig and dladm log anything that might help me debug the issue?
