Hi, thanks for the comment, but no, my access point is configured with the
ESSID greatwinterWLAN (in one word). the WLAN is part of the ESSID.

Btw, other clients here (non-Nevada) connect just fine to it, and I have
verified all settings on the AP, to make sure I'm using supported options (ie.
WEP 128 bit, etc.).

Just tried again like this:

[root at asagao-jkk ~]$ ifconfig wpi0 plumb

[root at asagao-jkk ~]$ ifconfig -a
lo0: flags=2001000849<UP,LOOPBACK,RUNNING,MULTICAST,IPv4,VIRTUAL> mtu 8232
index 1
        inet 127.0.0.1 netmask ff000000
gani0: flags=201000843<UP,BROADCAST,RUNNING,MULTICAST,IPv4,CoS> mtu 1500 index 2
        inet 192.168.2.5 netmask ffffff00 broadcast 192.168.2.255
        ether 0:16:17:4e:6d:b1
wpi0: flags=201000802<BROADCAST,MULTICAST,IPv4,CoS> mtu 1500 index 4
        inet 0.0.0.0 netmask 0
        ether 0:13:2:23:e4:58
lo0: flags=2002000849<UP,LOOPBACK,RUNNING,MULTICAST,IPv6,VIRTUAL> mtu 8252
index 1
        inet6 ::1/128

[root at asagao-jkk ~]$ wificonfig -i wpi0 scan
essid           bssid             type          encryption      signallevel
greatwinterWLAN 00:0d:88:bc:f8:65 access point wep 7

[root at asagao-jkk ~]$ wificonfig createprofile myprofile
essid=greatwinterWLAN encryption=wep wepkey1=**************************

[root at asagao-jkk ~]$ wificonfig showprofile myprofile
[myprofile]
        essid=greatwinterWLAN
        encryption=wep
        wepkey1=*****

[root at asagao-jkk ~]$ wificonfig -i wpi0 connect myprofile

wificonfig: failed to connect to profile 'myprofile'

So, no further than before...
