I was using the GNOME tool.  Different resolutions didn't fix the image
quality, and switching resolutions wasn't sufficient to switch on the
external display.

That reminds me of another difference, though: the indicator that I was
using the correct xorg.conf used to be that the resolution tool would
display 0MHz or some enormous number instead of 62MHz.  Yesterday it was
displaying 62.

I am.  I updated it yesterday.

FWIW, the projector itself is fine.  I tried a different laptop, and it
displayed correctly.
