is there any way I can patch this solaris 10 /04 up to a level where the
pwcl driver will work?

I think you have to install Solaris 10 03/05 or newer one to use pcwl
driver.

I have been using ThinkPad 600 with pcwl driver on Solaris 10 03/05.
I have no trouble.
