Figured it out. I'm was still running in 64 bit mode. I thought I had modified the GRUB config, but apparantly not.
Modified menu.lst to boot kernel/unix, now modload doesn't complain, and I'm able to plumb bcmndis0. Next step, wificonfig. This message posted from opensolaris.org
