While I'm not here to defend Intel against rants, I know about the Thinkpad 
BIOS lock.  I used to have a IBM (now Levono) Thinkpad and it has BIOS and 
driver locks all over the place preventing use of unauthorized third-party cars 
(such as WiFi cards).  Intel has nothing to do with it--they just make 
components.  Complain to your laptop manufacturer.
