Others may work (HP, Lenovo, Asus, Acer, Clevo) but you'll have to be more picky. In line with your needs, a Core 2 processor with 2GB (Expandable to 4GB or more), Intel 965 or higher chipset and 64GB SSD may suit you. Not sure who can give you all of this, but there are vendors out there who provide barebones and upgrade options. An ASUS C90S while not equipped with SSD may suit you:
