For punchin, I use the same key on my laptop and desktop (not at the same time).
If you want to use multiple machines at the same time, there's an alternate 
method using certificates.  Ask on punchin-interest.

I've used vpnc on Linux, but not Solaris, but no reason it shouldn't compile 
(with prereq packages installed).  Google for instructions for compiling (no I 
don't have the object). You need at least vpnc-0.5.1, otherwise patch this 
source file:
Edit /usr/share/vpnc/vpnc-script replacing the line 75 by the corrected version
