I am connecting just as you described and my essid is not "linksys". However, in answer to part of my orginal question wificonfig puts error messages in /var/messages. I see this message:
ipw: [ID 912663 kern.warning] WARNING: rc4_crypt failed (47) and a rc4_final failed after that.
