Maybe you'll need to use a second compressed miniroot for the userland
it needs to mount and make things work.  Since I don't have a second
disk and can't even get Xen working because they are still lagging on
binary builds, I can't really test this situation you have.  From my
experience with other operating systems, it'd need an image with the
necessary bits to run what's needed for mounting ZFS in this instance. 
ZFS' tools need libc and other /usr libraries/programs, so those need to
be available before ZFS is even loaded.
