I can give that suggestion a strong second. I was able to rule out and (rule in) a number of prospective laptops in a single trip with an opensolaris live CD.
I was also able to amuse myself by making the laptop speaker scream (and I'll add that some of them had some pretty loud speakers for lappys!) doing something like an ls -lR >/dev/audio as my test for basic audio functionality. :) Nathan.
