Thanks, Randy ... I admit to feeling somewhat dumb this morning.  Why?  Because 
I found that FN + F9 toggled between trackpad and external (USB) mouse.

Sorry.  :-(

However, even leaving the machine overnight without the mouse in, still 
impossible to wake it this morning.  

/var/adm/messages has [i]no[/i] occurrence of the word 'suspended'.  Here is
