I take it you switch between the three modes with your CRT/LCD key
(Fn-F8 on the Dell X1)?
I have a very similar problem, in clone mode the image on the external
monitor looks very distorted. I think this is because xorg does not get
the refresh rate right, it is not correct in external only mode either
(http://bugzilla.ubuntu.com/show_bug.cgi?id=15051).
