No - Mesa's software renderer doesn't provide direct rendering, and

Oh. Hum. I'm a bit lost so. I have an X300 in my laptop. I'm using the
standard 'ati' driver. 'glxinfo' claims direct rendering is available.
However, 'glxheads' says the renderer is..

  GL_RENDERER: Mesa DRI R300 20040924 TCL

Ah. Some reading enlightens me to the fact that mesa stopped
being just s/w rendering quite some time ago. Doh. However, the
mesa dri page tells me that only 2d dri is supported for my
chipset. Doesn't that mean that just checking for direct rendering
evidence of 3d acceleration is not enough? A quick test with
glxgears shows that there is certainly no acceleration going on.
