We had no problems with smp on 2.6.8.3, and since this cpu supports hyperthreading we enjoy a *big* power boost using smp. :)
I think it's this box(via p200) + rtl8139 that's the problem - it's always been a bit flakey. I have the same card in a PII350 intel440bx and it has always been OK.
