You don't have to use eth0:1, it is actually considered obsolete since kernel 2.2. Use ip addr add ip1/mask1 dev eth0 ip addr add ip2/mask2 dev eth0 As far as I know, modern distributions support this, although I am not sure about the exact syntax in their configuration files.
