Oh that looks like mostly what I want. I guess I will bite the bullet about the class names, and make them "contextmenu" and "contextmenuitem", and document that someplace that if you want to use them from script, you use those same names.

Actually, I thought the rich text component was written the way you
want.  This is why we set up the extensions directory in lps/
components.  Perhap Ben (cc-ed) can elaborate.
