Henry:

Don't know if this helps any, BUT, I can't run python from XEmacs on WindowsXP either.  I get a wierd dialog box about an illegal instruction.

However, using emacs on cygwin (no X-Windows), I don't have a problem doing the following:

$ emacs
mx-shell
$ python
>>> print "Hello";
Hello

OK Gang, help me out here.

I am using a Windows XP machine, and run emacs. I have never been able
to get shell
mode working properly. If I fire up a shell (M-x shell) and run some
command line program
like Python, I can type input into it, but the output never shows up
in the buffer, it silently gets swallowed someplace.

I can run either NTEmacs or emacs under X in Cygwin, but in either
case, I can't use shell mode. Does anyone have any secret to making
this work?

Thanks
