Setting to null is an acceptable work-around.  Please put a FIXME:

FIXME [2006-10-05 pbr] (LPP-NNNN) Revert to deleting from global when  
modules are implemented.

I can't look up the 'implement modules' bug number (I'm offline),  
perhaps you can find it.
