[Have a look at this. I'm not really happy with it. I'd be
interested to see what kind of performance improvement you see with
it. The main thing that I am not happy about is that it doesn't
really happen at the right phase of the compiler. We really want
these kind of transforms to happen early on, and for all compilers,
not in each compiler. Because it happens at the wrong phase right
now, the unique variable names are not being optimized out, for
instance.]
