Where does $JAVA_OPTS come from? It doesn't exist on my mac or my
linux machine.
Have I not set tomcat up correctly?

$ echo $JAVA_OPTS
-Xmx500m
And the tomcat startup script uses that to up the max RAM to 512MB.
If you have 2GB, you could set it higher even.
