There was a good explanation of the difference in the flex and non flex libraries in this release note
http://groups.google.com/group/google-maps-api-for-flash/browse_thread/thread/b752ed80fbf15069# Hey developers- The 1.7 version of the API is now available for download: http://maps.googleapis.com/maps/flash/release/sdk.zip The changelog for 1.7 is available here: http://code.google.com/p/gmaps-api-issues/wiki/MapsAPIforFlashChangelog This release actually includes 2 SWCs: one general SWC, and one SWC especially for flex. The general SWC can be used with Flash CS3 (!!) or in Flex, and the Flex SWC can only be used in Flex in combination with a "Map" Flex component. Using the Map component means that you now get to embed Flex components inside info windows, controls, etc. Because of these changes, we've added specific tutorials on getting started in Flash CS3, Flex SDK, and FlexBuilder: http://code.google.com/apis/maps/documentation/flash/intro.html There are also quite a few other new features in this release, and new/ updated demos. Check out the TileDetector demo to see ScaleControl, Flex components in controls, and TileLayerOverlay (!). Also check out the DrivingDirectionsInput demo to see avoidHighways + walking directions, and check out the PolylineOptionsPlayground to see geodesic polys. The demo gallery is here: http://code.google.com/apis/maps/documentation/flash/demogallery.html Start playing around with the new features and let us know if you spot regression bugs or bugs with the new features.
